Makassar, formerly Ujung Pandang, is the capital of the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi. It is the largest city in the region of Eastern Indonesia and home to 1.7 million people. It is also home to Indonesia’s busiest airport.
Islam is the predominant religion in Makassar, but Christians comprise 15% of the population of Indonesia. Some of the larger Christian congregations are on the island of Sulawesi, although most are in the northern section.
In recent years the government has reestablished the old Dutch policy of “transmigration.” This is a plan to ease overpopulation in Java by moving landless people to the outer islands. They are given land, money, and fertilizer to start a small subsistence farm. Unfortunately, this plan has been a failure resulting in deep social divides.
