Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan and is located near the border with India. “Islam” refers to the religion of Islam, Pakistan’s state religion, and “abad” is a Persian suffix meaning “cultivated place,” indicating an inhabited place or city. It is home to 1.2 million citizens.
The nation is historically and culturally related to Iran, Afghanistan, and India. Since gaining independence in 1947, Pakistan has struggled to attain political stability and sustained social development.
The country is estimated to be the home of four million orphaned children and 3.5 million Afghan refugees, putting a significant strain on an already fragile economy and social structure.
With just 2.5% of the population being Christian, and the influence of fundamentalist Muslim values pervasive in the country, there is a great deal of persecution against Christians and other minority religious groups.
